The Hurt Locker

Hello people I hope you all are doing great. Even this week I was stuck with lots and lots of work. The moment I reach home the only way I relax is by watching a movie…what ever may be the genre I always watch movies with heart at right place. In that way I came across this wonderful movie called ‘The Hurt Locker’ which made me awestruck for its outstanding direction. Not that they have used CGI effectively but the story which they picked itself is unique and they told this unique story in a more interesting way with high drama and emotions. That is the reason why this movie has been nominated for 9 Academy Awards! Wooww which includes Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Actor in a leading role, Best Screenplay adoption, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing & Best Sound Editing. Apart from these nominations it has also swept awards @ BAFTA including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Leading Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound & Best Visual Effects.

I hope this introduction is enough to tell you the caliber of this movie…..now lets get into the story….

During the early stages of the post-invasion period in Iraq in 2004,Sergeant First Class William James becomes the team leader of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit with the U.S. Army's Bravo Company, replacing Staff Sergeant Thompson, who was killed by a remote-detonated improvised explosive device (IED) in Baghdad. He joins Sergeant J.T. Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge, whose jobs are to communicate with their team leader via radio inside his bombsuit, and provide him with rifle cover while he examines IEDs. During their first mission together, James's insistence on approaching a suspected IED without first sending in a bomb disposal robot leads Sanborn and Eldridge to consider him reckless. At Camp Victory, James befriends a local boy who calls himself "Beckham" (after soccer star David Beckham) who works for a local merchant operating at the base selling bootlegged DVDs.

Subsequent missions see James disarming a bomb at the United Nations building in Baghdad, the team joining forces with a British PMC team in a firefight with insurgent snipers, and the team retrieving unexploded ordnance from a warehouse, all while tensions mount between the team members due to James's recklessness and unorthodox methods. During the latter mission, James discovers the dead body of a young boy who has been surgically implanted with an unexploded bomb. James believes it to be Beckham, while Sanborn and Eldridge are not certain.

James, dressed in civilian clothing, accosts the merchant for whom Beckham worked, and orders the merchant to drive him to Beckham's house. Upon entering the house, James encounters an Iraqi professor and demands to know who was responsible for turning Beckham into a "body bomb". The professor gives no sign of understanding this request, but thinks James is a CIA agent and calmly invites him to sit down as a guest of his household. A confused James is forced out of the house by the man's wife, and he gets back into Camp Victory with the help of a sympathetic guard. That night, the EOD team is called to the Green Zone to investigate a nearby tanker truck explosion that resulted in numerous civilian casualties. James, acting on a hunch, tells his team to follow him beyond the blast crater to the dark streets nearby; he believed that insurgents had detonated the truck from a safe distance, and watched the Allied response from a grove of trees. James orders Eldridge and Sanborn to split up and investigate three alleys; neither James or Sanborn find anything, but they hear Eldridge's rifle fire and come upon the body of a dead insurgent, but no Eldridge. Following the alley, they track down two insurgents who are carrying Eldridge, who is accidentally shot in the leg when the EOD team kills the insurgents.

Hmmm quite a different story…what happens next??? Will our James, Sanborn & Eldridge able to survive their mission of detonating bombs??? Will they ever spend usual civilian life as they dreamt??? What is the moral of the story??? To know all these interesting facts pick this DVD ASAP.

As per Vish: A MUST WATCH movie for all kind of movie lovers. It has drama..emotion…thrill…action minus commercial elements! Lol Kudos to the lady director ‘Kathryn Bigelow’ (who is also ex-wife of James Cameron) who deserves every accolade she is receiving. Added to her work is outstanding performance by Jeremy Renner & technical crew who made this movie an experience. I hope this movie will please you & Academy :)

Inglourious Basterds

Hello people I hope you all are doing good and enjoyed my last Academy Award offering ‘Sherlock Holmes’. Today I am coming with yet another Best Movie Nominee for this year called ‘Inglorious Basterds’, Directed by my favorite Quentin Tarantino and starring none other than ‘Brad pitt’. Few days back I spoke to one of my friend who told he didn’t like this movie and it increased interest in me to watch this movie and to check ‘How can Tarantino go wrong??’ . But once it is nominated for 8 Academy Awards & after reading few popular reviews I thought of giving it a shot and hence watched it yesterday. As I expected the movie is wonderful, exceptional & truly remarkable. I don’t want to argue with my friend as this is his first movie of Tarantino’s which he watched….so he didn’t understood what is the difference between Tarantino & others.

The best part of Tarantino’s direction is he never tells us movie scene-by-scene…he always tells us in chapter-by-chapter. And that is why the whole chapter happens mostly at one place and hence it will(must) take some worth-full time to establish the characters & complete it. And another biggest plus point of Tarantino is…he never misses the point & tells what he needs to tell as uniquely as possible.

Building his technique movie-by-movie intensifying story chapter-by-chapter he became the most sought director in the Hollywood….and that is why this movie has been nominated for eight Academy Awards including ‘Best Movie’,'Best Director' and 'Best Original Screenplay' Categories…and I do strongly believe that this movie is worth every penny. So, lets get into the story…

This movie unfolds over five chapters: Once upon a time... In Nazi-Occupied France; Inglourious Basterds; A German Night in Paris; Operation Kino and Revenge of the Giant Face.

In France in 1941, SS Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) arrives at a dairy farm to interrogate Perrier LaPadite (Denis Menochet) about rumors he is hiding the Jewish Dreyfus family. Landa persuades the farmer to confess to hiding the family underneath his floor. Landa orders the SS soldiers into the house to shoot the floorboards where LaPadite has confirmed the Dreyfuses are hiding below. The entire family is killed, with the exception of the teenage Shosanna, whom Landa allows to escape.

In Italy in the spring of 1944, Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) recruits a team of eight Jewish-American soldiers for a mission to get behind enemy lines and bring fear to all German servicemen. He tells the soldiers that they each owe him a hundred Nazi scalps. They operate with a "take no prisoners" attitude and come to be known as the 'Basterds'. One survivor of an attack by the 'Basterds', Private Butz (Sönke Möhring), is interviewed by Adolf Hitler (Martin Wuttke). Butz's account of the attack is shown via flashback as he tells that his squad was ambushed and his Sergeant was beaten to death with a baseball bat by Sgt. Donny Donowitz (Eli Roth), known by the Germans as "The Bear Jew". Butz then reveals that Raine carved a swastika onto his forehead with a knife so that he will be universally identifiable as a Nazi after the war.

In June 1944, three years after her family's murder, Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent) has assumed a new identity as 'Emmanuelle Mimieux' and is operating a cinema in Paris. She meets Frederick Zoller (Daniel Brühl), a German marksman whose exploits are to be celebrated in a Nazi propaganda film, Stolz der Nation (Nation's Pride). Zoller is attracted to Shosanna and convinces Joseph Goebbels (Sylvester Groth) to hold the premiere of his film at Shosanna's cinema. Shosanna realizes that the presence of several high-ranking Nazi officials provides an opportunity for revenge and resolves to burn down the cinema during the premiere by using a large quantity of flammable nitrate film. The British also learn of the premiere and dispatch Lt. Archie Hicox (Michael Fassbender) to infiltrate the event aided by the 'Basterds' and German film actress and double agent, Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Krüger). Hicox and two of the 'Basterds' meet with Hammersmark at a tavern where an SS officer (August Diehl) notices Hicox's odd accent and that he gives the wrong three-fingered order for drinks. The resulting standoff erupts into a firefight, leaving everyone dead except Hammersmark. Raine interrogates Hammersmark, and upon learning that Hitler will be attending the premiere, devises a plan where himself, Donny, and Omar (Omar Doom) will pose as Hammersmark's Italian escorts at the premiere. Landa later investigates the tavern and retrieves Hammersmark's shoe and an autographed napkin.

hmmm interesting...what happens next?? will they ever succeed in killing 'Hitler'...who will take the revenge first?? and who are not able to?? who will be the victim at last?? to know all these secrets you have to pick this DVD.

As per Vish: First thing first this movie is purely fictional. And as all movies of Tarantino this movie also carries some outstanding performances by all the actors and especially 'Christoph Waltz' who is nominated for ‘Best Supporting Character’. I really liked BG score, which most of the time multiplied the intensity of the scene. So, people if you are a fan of ‘Tarantino’ then this is for you…have a reel rolling :)

No Man's Land

Hello people a very good morning to everyone. I had a very lazy vacation at my hometown Anantapur. Waking up late in the morning... having a nice breakfast....again waiting for yummy lunch....roaming here and there like a vagabond....meeting friends and having some bandi food...again coming back to home having a nice dinner...watching TV like an Idiot and having a nice sleep. This was my routine from past 5 days. And from today I have to run for everything...from shit to office... I have to say myself Run Vish Run! lol

Ok coming to today's movie it is none than 2001 Oscar winner in the 'Best Foreign movie' Category...'No Man's Land'. A tragic war comedy set in the border of Bosnia and Slovenia. I wanted to see this movie long before because it has won the Academy Award from competing with 'Lagaan' Yeah our very own Lagaan :)

Two wounded soldiers, a Bosniak (Čiki, portrayed by Branko Đurić) and a Bosnian Serb (Nino, portrayed by Rene Bitorajac) are caught between their lines in the no man's land, in a struggle for survival. The two soldiers confront each other in a trench, where they wait for dark. They trade insults and even find some common ground. Confounding the situation is another wounded Bosniak soldier (Cera, portrayed by Filip Šovagović) who wakes from unconsciousness. A land mine had been buried beneath him by the Bosnian Serbs; should he make any move, it would be fatal.

A French sergeant (Marchand, portrayed by Georges Siatidis), of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR), gets involved in effort to help the three trapped soldiers, despite initial orders to the contrary by high command. UNPROFOR's mission in Bosnia was to guard the humanitarian aid convoys, to remain neutral and act as a mere bystander. Luckily, an English reporter arrives on scene, bringing media pressure to bear that moves the United Nations high command to swing in to action to try to save the soldiers.

hmmm will UN soldiers save our people from the No Man's Land?? what happens to the soldier who is on Land mine?? will our soldiers ever realise that war is from the political side and they are becoming the victims of it??? to know all these answers you have to pick this DVD.

As per Vish: Undoubtedly this movie deserves Academy Award for its witty dialogues and perfect acting. The whole movie runs in a trench and with minimum cast...the screenplay should be very good to maintain the momentum of the movie and at the same time the story has to say what it is meant to say...that is War only wants Lives...and is full of Political drama where everyone is playing for their own benefits. This movie succeeds at every point and still able to give you the message and thats why it has won Academy Award against to our 'Lagaan'.

The Pianist

Hello people I hope you all had a great week, I had a good week. It is free for all in our state (Andhra Pradesh)from past few days. After every 3 months these MLA's meet to speak about problems faced by the public...but they hardly speak about it and spend most of the time doing walkouts and dharnas. This time they didnt even stepped into Assembly by submitting resignation. Over 100 MLA's have submitted their resignation to the speaker...wwowww! that is what I call unity! But where was this unity when Karnataka government increased the height of Almatti???where was this unity when Gali brothers transported anantapur mines to rest of the world and became billionaires in over night???where was this unity when the daily eatables like rice & dal is above the upper class line??? These students who are fighting for their land....never opened mouth when thousands of their seniors/super seniors/brothers/sisters were sacked from jobs due to recession???They never questioned governments reply when a superior exam like CAT got goofed up. They never questioned when their standards of education reduced to shit. We never fight for the right reason....we never fight for the right cause....so obviously we should not expect the right decision.

These politicians (mostly seema & andhra) have resigned just because they spent crores of rupees in the capital, so it is their personal problem for which they are using students and using tax payers money..our money! Students from premier universities (are they really students?? god knows)doing all damage to the public properties....which is built by tax payers money....our money! Every time we are prompt while paying tax....but are these politicians prompt to their Assembly?? to the public money?? absolutely NO....they are only prompt to their money...their properties. So, this is the right time for us to be prompt @ our properties and our money. So, this is for all those students who have brain & heart at right places....you are burning your father's/brother's/sister's money who are paying taxes on time. Which is = burning your Yamaha....burning your double bedroom flat...burning your shop.

Coming to today's movie I am presentng 'The Pianist', an outstanding movie in every standard...an exceptional performance by lead actor....perfect direction...and a very perfect movie for the perfect occassion....YES today is my 400th post. So, lets roll the reels...

Władysław Szpilman (Brody), a famous Polish Jewish pianist working for Warsaw Radio, sees his whole world collapse with the outbreak of World War II and the invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. After the radio station is rocked by explosions from German bombing, Szpilman goes home and learns that Great Britain and France have declared war on Nazi Germany. He and his family rejoice, believing the war will end quickly.

When the Nazis' armed SS organization occupies Warsaw after the Wehrmacht passes on, living conditions for the Jewish population gradually deteriorate as their rights are slowly eroded: first they are allowed only a limited amount of money per family, then they must wear armbands imprinted with the blue Star of David to identify themselves, and eventually, on Halloween 1940, they are all forced into the squalid Warsaw Ghetto. There, they face hunger, persecution and humiliation from the SS and the ever-present fear of death or torture and suffering starvation (this is shown in one scene when a old man tries to steal food from an old woman. When it falls in the street, the man eats it, causing the woman to sob sadly). The Nazis became increasingly sadistic and the family witnesses many horrors inflicted on other Jews. In one scene, an NCO, likely Nazi war criminal Josef Blosche, leads a group of Einsatzgruppen who go into the apartment across from the Szpilmans. They order the family on the top floor to stand up for them, then when an elderly man in a wheelchair is unable to stand up, the NCO orders the other SS men to throw the man off the balcony. The rest of the family are then taken out into the street and shot, and the SS drive off, running over the bodies along the way.

Before long, the family, along with thousands of others, are rounded up for deportation by train to the extermination facility at Treblinka. As the Jews are being forced onto cattle cars, Szpilman is saved at the last moment by one of the Jewish Ghetto Police, who happens to be a family friend. Separated from his family and loved ones, Szpilman manages to survive. At first he is pressed into a German reconstruction unit inside the ghetto as a slave labourer. During this period, another Jewish labourer confides to Szpilman two critical pieces of information: one, that many Jews who still survive know of the German plans to exterminate them, and two, that a Jewish uprising against the Germans is being actively prepared for. Szpilman volunteers his help for the plan. He is enlisted to help smuggle weapons into the ghetto, almost being caught at one point.

Later, before the uprising starts, Szpilman decides to go into hiding outside the ghetto, relying on the help of non-Jews who still remember him such as ex-coworker of his from the radio station. While living in hiding, he witnesses many horrors committed by the SS, such as widespread killing, beating and burning of Jews and others (the burning is mostly shown during the two Warsaw uprisings). In 1943, Szpilman also finally witnesses the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising he helped to bring about, and its aftermath as the SS forcibly enters the ghetto and kill nearly all the remaining insurgents. A year goes by and life in Warsaw further deteriorates. Szpilman is forced to flee his first hiding place after a neighbour detects his presence and threatens to inform on him. In his second hiding place, near a German military hospital, Szpilman nearly dies due to jaundice and malnutrition.

awwww!!! what happens next?? will anybody comes to his rescue...will he able to survive when the war comes to end??

As per Vish: Undoubtedly one of the best Drama movie of all time. Outstanding direction with exception performance added with superb BG score. So, on this occasion of 400th post...enjoy 'The Pianist'.

Full Metal Jacket

Heeey guys and gals I hope you enjoyed the ride in 'Gran Torino'. Today I am comingup with yet another Drama called 'Full Metal Jacket' This is a journey of few a squad of U.S. Marines from their basic training through their participation in the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War.

A group of new recruits in the United States Marine Corps have just arrived at Parris Island for basic training. Their drill instructor is Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey), who wastes no time in starting the process of making these civilians into Marines. The Vietnam War is in full swing, and his job is to produce trained Marines. The film's first section focuses on the physical and psychological treatment of the recruits, in particular Leonard Lawrence (Vincent D'Onofrio), whom Hartman gives the derisive nickname "Gomer Pyle."

Hartman immediately pegs Pyle as a misfit. He is socially awkward, overweight, out of shape, and afraid of heights. He has trouble coping with the physical rigors of recruit training and does not respond well to orders and procedures. These deficiencies get the constant attention of Hartman, who punishes him to encourage him to perform better as well as to provide a lesson to the others. Hartman ultimately appoints the protagonist "Joker" (Matthew Modine) as Pyle's squad leader, bunkmate, and mentor, stressing that Joker will set Pyle straight, or else. Pyle eventually begins to straighten up and become a more disciplined recruit on some fronts, but forgets to lock his footlocker before a barracks inspection. Opening it, Hartman finds a contraband jelly doughnut inside and immediately puts a new rule into effect: every time Pyle makes a mistake, Hartman will punish everyone else in the platoon because they are not helping Hartman by encouraging Pyle to work harder toward becoming a Marine. Shortly afterward, the other recruits gang up on Pyle during the night and give him a blanket party, pinning him to his bunk using a blanket and beating him severely with bars of soap in wrapped up towels and socks. Joker, the last one to hit Pyle, covers his ears once he is back in his bunk to block out the latter's moaning and sobbing.

Over the next few days, Joker realizes that Pyle has become sullen and withdrawn. Pyle begins to detach himself from the platoon as well as the rest of reality. His expert marksmanship impresses Hartman, but Joker becomes worried upon watching Pyle carry on conversations with his rifle. On completing their training, everyone in 3092 platoon, including Pyle, graduates and is assigned a Military Occupational Specialty, the most common being 0300-Infantry (one notable exception is Joker who is assigned to 4212-Basic Military Journalism). On the platoon's last night on Parris Island, Joker is assigned fire watch (guard) duty, during which he discovers Pyle in the head (toilet) loading his rifle with live ammunition. Frightened, Joker attempts to calm Pyle as he begins shouting and executing drill commands and reciting the Rifleman's Creed. The noise awakens Hartman, who rushes into the head and orders Pyle to put down the rifle. Pyle shoots Hartman, killing him, then sits on a toilet and kills himself, putting the barrel of his rifle into his mouth and shooting through the back of his head, as a stunned Joker looks on.

awww what happens next! will they ever fight for their country...what happens to Joker....what will happen in Vietnam is the remaining story which I dont want to reveal.

As per Vish: There are so many movies which were made on Vietnam backdrop but only few will stand out...you can add this one too in that list. This flick is divided into two parts...the first part is entertaining with some funny training moments and the next one is totally war oriented which I didnt explained. Drama movie lovers will love this movie. Have a fantastic sunday with this flick :)

Platoon

After a series of good drama movies I came back with yet another powerful movie called 'Platoon', which is highly acclaimed for its bold story telling and which was directed by none other than...'Oliver Stone'. So lets see this story..

A young US Army soldier, Private Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen), arrives in South Vietnam with several other replacements and is assigned to the 25th Infantry Division (which had a very successful combat record in Vietnam). As the new men step off the plane upon arrival in Vietnam, they see the seasoned veterans who have just finished their tours of duty (with the "thousand-yard stare" fully developed), taunting the new guys as they board a transport plane home. Along with fellow soldier Private Gardner, Taylor joins an experienced rifle platoon that has suffered in recent combat operations. His enthusiasm quickly evaporates as he goes on endless patrols and, as a new guy, is assigned to dig foxholes and perform other arduous tasks.

On his first night ambush patrol, his unit is set upon by a squad of North Vietnamese Army (NVA) troops who walk into the squad's ambush position. The soldier meant to be on guard duty (Junior) has fallen asleep. Private Gardner dies after being shot while standing up in a firefight and Tex (a soldier with a bad attitude towards Elias and new recruits) has his leg blown off from a grenade thrown by Sgt. Red O'Neil (John C. McGinley)[1]. Private Taylor is grazed in the neck. Junior shirks all responsibility, stating that Chris was on guard duty.

As Private Taylor recovers from his wound—a rite of passage that grants him greater social contact with his platoon mates—he reveals that he dropped out of college to volunteer for service in Vietnam (Stone himself had dropped out of Yale twice). He states that he felt college was leading him nowhere and that it was unfair that lower-class youths had to carry the burden of the fighting in Vietnam, while rich kids could avoid the draft. His new friends among the more experienced troops introduce him to the "Underworld," a bunker converted into a pseudo-nightclub, where they smoke marijuana and opium, drink beer, and dance with each other to soul music.

After returning to field duty, Taylor sees more combat and, during another patrol, a bunker complex is discovered. (In real life, the 25th Division encountered tunnel complexes at Cu Chi much like the ones in the film.[citation needed]) During the examination of a campfire left by the enemy, two soldiers, Sanderson and Sal, are mortally wounded by a booby trap. After leaving the bunker complex area, the soldiers come across another member of their unit, Manny, who has been snatched from his guard duty, tied to a post, and mutilated.

Reaching a nearby village several kilometers north of the bunker with a belief that the enemy was spotted there, the platoon discovers food and weapons caches. This scene is loosely based on the true events surrounding the My Lai Massacre.[citation needed]The villagers insist they were given no choice by the Viet Cong. The troops, tired and angry because of the deaths of some of their comrades, take out their frustrations on the village. They also begin murdering and torturing several civilians on many occasions such as the murder of a one-legged villager by Taylor and Bunny. While half of the men seem intimidated by these acts like Francis and O'Neil, the rest continue. Staff Sgt. Barnes kills a woman while interrogating her husband. The platoon burns the village and leaves, with a final scene depicting the gang rape of a teenage girl (which Chris stops).

Sgt. Elias (Willem Dafoe), having witnessed Staff Sgt. Barnes' (Tom Berenger) illegal actions and Lt. Wolfe's (Mark Moses) condoning of them, attacks Barnes and then puts the two men on report to their Company Commander (played by Dale Dye, a Marine Corps Vietnam veteran and technical advisor to the film). Chris, having originally admired Barnes, now finds his loyalties leaning towards Elias, while Barnes' supporters talk of fragging Elias to prevent him from acting as an eyewitness in a formal report about the illegal killings. Taylor speaks of this as "a civil war in the platoon. Half with Elias, half with Barnes.

hmmm the war against Vietnam turned U turn and what happens next....will our platoon win the battle or save their lives and comeback....to know the secret you have to watch this dramatic movie.

As per vish: One of the most realistic war movies of all time. All the actors have done justice to their characters. Again it is strictly for drama genre lovers. Have a nice day people :)
